New Music: Navigating Nneka’s Concrete Jungle
If you haven’t heard about Nneka let me fill in the gaps. She was born in Warri, an Oil City in the Delta region of Nigeria to a Nigerian father and a German mother. Staying true to her roots Nneka produces music and writes lyrics that reflect much of her history and life in Nigeria as well as her time spent in Western Europe.
Her debut album Victim of Truth (released in the UK in 2007), an inspirational mix of hot loops, black consciousness and 21st-century soul music – was received with praise by the British media. ‘As good as The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,’ said UK’s The Sunday Times.
Now, she has dropped her first North American released album, Concrete Jungle. She states that this album is an offering of love, hope and optimism dedicated to the people of Warri & the Niger Delta of Nigeria. From start to finished she holds you captivated with each emotional track. Through it all you will experience a myriad of feelings moving from chagrin, to rage and then quickly to yearning. As she puts it herself: “I do it in a sweet way – but I sing to speak the truth.”
Nneka is currently on tour with Nas and Damian Marley to help them promote their ‘Distant Relatives’ album. She has also agreed to participate in this year’s Lilith Fair Concert (2010) where the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Kelly Clarkson, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna and others will be performing. She will be performing in Washington, Raleigh and Charlotte (United States).

New Ish: Miguel featuring J Cole “All I Want Is You”
For almost a year now I been listening to both J.Cole and Miguel Jontel on repeat, so when I found out that they had a collabo a few months back I was more than excited to hear what they had created. “All I Want Is You” by Miguel featuring J. Cole is the first single off of Miguel’s upcoming, self-titled album and is much like most contemporary R&B tracks which speak of love lost but Miguel’s smooth vocals and J. Cole’s raw emotion when he spits, combined with a hot beat makes this joint a banger. This track has been steadily making its way up the US charts, so it’s awesome that a video has been released to aid in the songs’ climb to the top. These two very talented gentlemen haven’t had the easiest road to success, Miguel who is a singer/song writer released a single a couple years back with minimal success and had his album shelved by his label while J. Cole has been trying to get a record deal since age thirteen, Cole even choose to attend college in New York in hopes of landing a record deal, but earlier than that could happen he graduated and even released two mixtapes before being the first artist signed to Roc Nation late last year. Check out Miguel’s mixtape “Mischief” and the track “Be My Vixen” (if you can find it) as well J. Cole “The Warm Up” mixtape, these two are most definitely ones to watch out for… Enjoy!

New Ish: Charice “Note to God”
So a friend of mine called me overly excited on the phone asking me “Why didnt you tell me about this little girl?”
I heard her song and watched the music video but I didnt take in how talented that this young artist by the name of Cherise was and the impact that she will have in the music industry.
Introduced to the world two years ago on Oprah she was a young Filipino girl that wished to sing with the likes of Celine Dion and Whitney Houston. Now at 18 years old she is climbing the charts with her new single with Iyaz called “Pyramid”.
Her voice is extrodinary and I could see growing into the iconic status’ of musical diva’s. With the help of grammy award winning producer David Foster I dont think that will be too hard.
Check out this video clip of Charise on Oprah singing “Note to God”, this song is too beautiful it actually made me cry.
